While other automakers are mired in the muck of one of the worst auto slumps in history, Kia is busy going about the business of reinventing itself. Flush with confidence after the recent successful launch of its all-new Soul, Kia has reloaded and is firing another shot across the bow of its competition with the 2010 Kia Forte, its new bread-and-butter car that replaces the Spectra.
As the test week rolled along, I warmed up nicely to the Soul. It was kind of like someone discovering at age 40 that they liked Aretha Franklin. The neat styling, welcoming interior, good storage space for this size vehicle and its solid build won me over.
By week’s end, the Soul had moved to the top of the list of my favorite compact boxy cars, sans a week in the new Nissan Cube. It’s good fun to run errands in and Kia’s 10-year, 100,000 mile warranty should not be overlooked.

The boxy shape is appealingly honest. Rectangles are just what they appear to be — roomy containers. And when designers start with a box, delightful things happen to passenger space and comfort.
For a little car — same length as a Honda Fit — Soul packages enough space to haul adults and their gear in comfort, though three-across in back is a skosh tight. But fore-aft room is generous. In fact, the back seat has nearly as much legroom as most cars’ front seats — meaning it has a lot more than most rear seats.
Lanky adults can sit back there without rubbing knees against the back of the front seat, even when it’s back far enough for tall folks in front.
For another thing, a box swallows a lot more stuff than you’d get inside a car with the same footprint but a sloping roofline.

It’s not often that a car’s name actually matches its personality. But for the $17,645 Kia Soul Sport, the name fits. The Soul Sport was easily the most fun to drive of the three boxes here. On our canyon section, the Kia’s sport suspension and robust 142-hp, 2.0-liter Four made short work of the switchbacks. The large 18-inch tires offered the most grip, and the steering provided the kind of tactile feedback through the wheel that a sporty car should. In terms of acceleration, the Soul felt nearly as quick as the Scion, and the Sport’s five-speed manual was only a tick or two less refined than the Scion’s.
